I discovered this delightful project in the Female Geek Bloggers G+ Community a few weeks ago, and I encourage any other bloggers out there to participate. Ariel, founder of the blog Nerdy Birdie, launched “100 Days of Being Geek Chic & Healthy” to prompt positive discourse in the online geekosystem. According to her site:
I created 100 Days of Being Geek Chic and Healthy, not only for me but all geek girls who struggle with how they truly see themselves on the inside. Beautiful and Awesome.
So far the project has gone through the three weeks, with the topics being:
- Week 1: Introducing Yourself
- Week 2: The Home Behind the Blogger
- Week 3: Comic Book Love
Bloggers have approached the weekly themes with either daily posts delving into one facet of the theme, or one weekly post discussing the topic at large. Which brings us to Week 4: Exercise & Health. In spirit of Nerdy Birdie, I present you with my favorite healthy things:
Yoga with Adrienne
Adrienne is my go-to online yoga instructor. She has a fantastic selection of yoga videos on YouTube, ranging from pose tutorials to thirty minute long core workouts. You can always find something to suit your mood and time constraints. Her sense of humor puts a smile on my face even during the most difficult poses. She doesn’t pretend to be perfect in her yoga practice, but she is the perfect instructor. For those truly looking to expand their yoga practice, she offers a very affordable online program through her website.
For anyone hoping to jump start their way into a regular yoga routine, Adrienne created a “30 Days of Yoga” series to ring in the new year that will help you get your juices flowing.
Wearable fitness trackers are all the rage, so I hardly need to explain what they do. I purchased the FitBit because it syncs with my workplace’s Vitality Program, which allows me to accrue points as I complete workouts that I can eventually trade in for Amazon or iTunes gift cards. In fact, the FitBit was recently featured in a Business Insider article citing its effectiveness at getting us to move. And they’re right! These tiny little buggers are a surprisingly successful incentive to find opportunities to move around during the day.
Walking My Dog
One of the perks of dog ownership is that they do not let you be a lazy lump on the couch all day long. Maxine keeps me honest and punctual. I get up at 7 am every morning to let her outside. We eat breakfast together, sometimes while reading comic books, and then go on a half mile walk. It is a great way to start my day that is both relaxing and rejuvenating. I make a point not to use anything with a screen attached to it until I get to work at 9.
I am always striving to fit more workouts into my day, but I am at least satisfied that between my dog, the FitBit, and my occasional dabbling with yoga that I am on my way to a healthier lifestyle.
